Temple in Macau

-Ma Temple (Chinese: China: Jyutping: MAA1 Gok3 Miu6; pinyin: Mage Miao, Portuguese Templo de-MA), which is located on the southwestern tip of the peninsula of Macao, is one of the oldest and most famous Taoist temples in Macao. Built in 1488, the temple is dedicated to Matsu, the goddess of seafarers and fishermen.

Macao's name is thought to have derived the name of the temple. It is said that when Portuguese sailors landed on the coast, outside the temple and asked the name of the place, the natives replied  (Jyutping "Maa1 Gok3"). The Portuguese then named the peninsula "Macao". The temple has been well described in ancient Chinese texts, as shown in the tables. It is also one of the first scenes filmed in China.

In 2005, the temple has become one of the headquarters of the Historic Center of Macao designated joined the World Heritage List.
