Lory birds in Jurong Bird Park

The idea of a permanent exhibition of bird was designed by the late Dr. Goh Keng Swee, former Finance Minister in 1968. Under a World Bank meeting in Rio de Janeiro, Dr Goh visited its zoological garden and was impressed by his free flight aviary. He tried to see that Jurong would be more than an industrial zone that Singaporeans have a place where they could escape from urban life, where people could relax with nature. On January 3, 1971, the Jurong Bird Park, built at a cost of S $ 3.5 million, opened to the public.

Jurong Bird Park is now a world famous bird zoo where there are copies of the magnificent bird life around the world, including a flock of flamingos in 1001. He is currently the largest park in the world in terms of bird numbers of birds and the second in terms of area, after Germany Vogel Park Walsrode. There are 4600 birds of 380 species in the Jurong Bird Park. Of these, 29 endangered species.

In 2006, the Jurong Bird Park has received a S $ 10 million makeover. When upgrading, the park now boasts a new entrance plaza, an exhibition of African wetlands, a park owned and led by Bongo Burgers restaurant, Ben & Jerry's ice cream parlor, gift shop and Bird Hospital.
