Lake Sevan

Lake Sevan (Armenia Սեւանա լի: Sevana Lich) is the largest lake in Armenia and one of the largest high altitude lakes in the world.

Lake Sevan is located in the central part of the Republic of Armenia in the province Gegharkunik, at an altitude of 1,900 m above sea level. The total area of ​​its territory is approximately 5,000 km2, the lake itself is 940 km2, and the amount and 34,0 billion cubic meters. It 'used in 28 rivers and streams. Only 10% of the water leaving the weapon discharge (Razdan) of the river, and the remaining 90% evaporates.

Before human intervention has radically changed the ecosystem of Lake Sevan, the lake was 95 meters deep, covering an area of ​​1360 km ² (5% of the entire area of ​​Armenia), had a volume of 58 cubic kilometers and a perimeter of 260 km. The surface of the lake was at an altitude of 1950 meters.

Along the Lake Urmia and Lake Van, Sevan has been considered as one of the three great lakes of the Kingdom of historical Armenia, collectively referred Seas, Armenia is only within the boundaries of the Republic of Armenia. Sevanavank peninsula (previously an island) is a historic part of the north shore of the lake.
